THE NIGHT WAS AMAZING. Simply wonderful. Rose drug her feet upstairs to her childhood bedroom she’d moved back into after the brace was removed. The bride and groom were safely on their way to Gatlinburg. All she wanted was a nice, hot bath. She poured some rose scented bath oil into the large claw-foot tub in her parents’ room. She hadn’t been in their room more than a few minutes at a time since she arrived at the ranch. Tonight she needed comfort. Tonight she wanted to feel her parents’ presence surround her.

Rose lit several candles and set them around the bathroom. The glow was somewhat haunting. She could feel her mother’s arms around her shoulder, reassuring her everything was going to be okay.

“One more glass of champagne should help me relax.” She slipped a toe into the steaming bubbles. She thought of the day’s events. The look on her brother’s face as Makenzie entered the church and the look on Tyler’s face while she sang burned in her memory. It was so overwhelming. Much more than she’d thought it would be.

Rose relaxed her head back and slowly sipped the champagne. Her eyelids felt heavy as if a weight was tied to each one. Soon she drifted off to sleep. Tyler’s warm touch enveloped her as she remembered old high school days. Football games, school dances, nights at the drive-in became real to her again. The warmth of Tyler’s lips on hers sent shivers over her body.

“Who’s there?” Rose woke to a loud noise coming from downstairs. She grabbed her robe and quickly swiped the sudsy water from her legs. “I know I locked the door.” She grabbed an umbrella from her parents’ bedroom and paused at the top of the stairs. Just as she lifted her foot toward the first step, a small kitten’s head peeped around the corner.

“Where’d you come from, sweetie?” She carefully approached the cat. “Come here, baby.” She reached out to let the fluffy ball of fur know she wasn’t going to hurt him when suddenly the kitten ran up the stairs and circled her legs. Rose picked up the tiny creature into her arms. She listened to the rumble of satisfaction from the kitten while she stroked its silky fur. “You almost gave me a heart attack.” She continued rubbing its head.

Rose walked down to the kitchen, wondering what all the noise was about. She noticed the back door standing wide open. “I could’ve sworn I locked this thing.”

“You did.” A voice whispered from behind her.

She ran toward the stairs not even thinking of looking back.

“Rosey? It’s just me.”

“Damn it, Tyler. You scared the shit out of me. What the hell are you doing here, and how the hell did you get in?”

He didn’t realize, until that moment, how stupid it was to scare her like that. Tyler’s face reddened with embarrassment. “I’m sorry. I thought you’d know it was me. Who else has a key to the house?”

“Hell, I don’t know.” Somehow she’d managed to hang on to the kitten even though he’d nearly clawed her to death.
